Until I saw this, here was my solution to not losing the solution file upon adding projects:

1)create a blank solution
2)add a solution folder to the blank solution
3)add at least two projects
4)delete the project folder

Yours is definitely a better solution – thank you!

This was always available in the UI under File > Add > New Project… or File > Add > Existing Project…

Yes, its mildly Annoying that the solution was automatically removed as the root object in Solution Explorer, but adding a new or existing project restores the old view.
